    What cheeses me off
    STEAM!

I buy a game I want to play and I have to register on line. I'm okay with that. But When a game I want to play requires Steam, I can't play it without being connected. I don't play games online; the connection here is poor. It is slow, and it drops out occasionally, like when there is a really heavy summer thunderstorm.

Oh no! The internet has gone out again, I'll play a game instead. SORRY! The game you paid for and installed on your systems and you have the original disks for WON'T WORK because you need the bloody internet to play games on your pc.

So I buy Empire Total War. Oh goody! I'll install that. Oh,need to register it, no problem. Bugger, it's a Steam account. Right! Installed, Registered, Verified and now I'll... wait SIX FRIGGING HOURS while Steam decides the new game I bought needs to be updated. I didn't ask for updates. I don't want special services available to online users. I just want to play a game, dammit, and I want to play it on my PC at any time I bloody well want to play.

And the worst part is I'm installing it on my laptop. The laptop I will be using when I go to remote areas, so I'll have something to do.

You know, those remote areas with NO INTERNET.

    Can't help feeling ripped off.

Multiplex #427: Merry Whatever, Part One

For the non-Hindus, the Pancha Ganapati is a five-day festival in honor of Ganesha, the patron of the arts and sciences, the Lord of Beginnings and the Lord of Obstacles. He is revered (and worshipped) not only by Hindus, but also Buddhists, Jains, and other religions. It was created about twenty years ago by American Hindus and is celebrated from December 21st through December 25th — so it sort of borrows a Christian tradition of putting holidays on top of other holidays so that its followers don't feel left out. (Like Christmas and the pagan mid-winter feasts.)

Along those lines, Sita Sings the Blues is a terrific 2008 animated film by cartoonist Nina Paley. It is, as Jason describes, a slightly irreverent animated version of the Ramayana with 1920's jazz songs (all sung by Annette Hanshaw). It's also quite a lovely film, and since it's available for download for free (even in high definition), I urge you all to check it out.

    Here's its trailer:

Computer Crashes after a few minutes
A serious issue has developed with my desktop computer. It over the last couple of days it has been crashing intermittently, and today it became completely unusable.

Basically, after the computer is on about six to ten minutes, it will completely freeze up. The screen just stalls and if music is playing it will make that weird stuttering noise that I'm sure you've all heard. At first I assumed it was Vista acting up and did a virus scan and all that. (This was before it was crashing quite as fast.) However, I tried a live CD of both Ubuntu and PuppyLinux and they crashed as well. In fact, even the Windows memory test thing froze suddenly. The one exception is that one time when loading Ubuntu is stalled and started displaying error messages about (I think) bad locations? or something like that. When I reset it, it will not beep and show the normal pre-loading splash screen like it should, but instead just make a regular noise that's sort of like a click. I've tried restarting, turning power off, and killing it with the switch on the rear, but it will keep doing the same thing. However, after several tries (maybe five or ten minutes?) it will start up correctly again.

This makes me think that it's a hardware issue, but I have no idea how to tell what it might be. I haven't changed anything since I built the computer last September. I don't see anything obviously loose inside, there's no dust, and the fans are spinning like they should be. There are no problems accessing the hard disks, DVD drive, or things like the wireless dongle. I built the computer myself, but all I did was basically buy some suggested parts and plug things in, and as I said it's been working pretty well for the past year.

Help me, [info]tech_support, you're (not quite) my only hope.

ETA:ETA:</strong> It looks like a problem with one stick of RAM. Thanks!

    Rain.
Still raining. If it hasn't been raining, it's been drizzling, and when it's not drizzling it's showering. The average December rainfall is 43mm; twice that has fallen since Christmas day. And yet there is still no run-off into the river. This is a soaking rain and it soaks right in as soon as it hits. It's the sort of rain we have needed for the last 3 years and never saw.

I blame [info]steve3. He and Sheena came out from England to get away from the cold, damp Christmas weather to enjoy our hot, dry Christmas.

I love the sound of rain on a tin roof. It's the sound I grew up with on the farm.

From the feeder of the Teenage Ninja Kitty Horde....
for [info]misskimh. I had a cat, Nicodemus the Evile Anti-Koala aka ThiefCat, who would steal crackers off of the table (or out of your hand if you weren't paying attention) and then go to a corner and eat them like a squirrel. He also stole small pieces of jewelry, coins, other shiny bits, and dice. He once stole a die while my ex was rolling die while watching tv. Just snuck his paw out and tucked it under himself while pretending to be watching tv as well. My ex didn't notice a thing. He also didn't believe it when I asked him to count his dice, he noticed one missing, and I said, "Pick up the cat." "What?" "Trust me. Just pick up the cat." ::chuckle::

I was turning right when some evil bint in a huge red van stared me down and cut me off from one lane over. She very nearly crushed my tiny car flat but I lucked out. I followed her to the parking lot of the Target but by the time I got out of my car she was already in the store, so I wrote a hilarious note on the back of a Cub dietary fiber guide and stuck it on her windshield. I wish I could have yelled at her in person, but no way am I hunting her down in this boxing day store madness.

    Reputable websites cause viruses?
I always that it was only possible to get a virus by getting emails with attachments. The other day, I was looking at msnbc.com (unfortunately, like an idiot, I had my AV program turned off) and I went to a story and I ended up getting a virus. It went to a black screen and said "your computer has been infected". I couldn't get my computer to do anything. I had to take it into get fixed because I am so computer stupid.

    Can't install Windows updates.
I have a Vaio laptop and, for whatever reason, it's been completely unable to install any updates for Windows Vista since December 10th. The installation fails, and two errors are listed: Code 8007371C and Code 80070057. I haven't tried taking any measures to fix this problem, since I don't know where to start. If anyone could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2.

Ok ok so it isn't brilliant, technically speaking, to go running around up to one's knees in snow on a slush-covered lake in the middle of the night in one's long underwear and with only a very enthusiastic dog for company, but boy is it fun. There are two snow-fatasses out there somewhere where the Captain managed to knock me ass over teakettle. I made up for it by grabbing wads of super-smooshy surface snow and making him play fetch with them. HA.

It is perfect snowman snow right now because it has been above freezing all day and sleeting like a mofo. Even after the huge meltoff this afternoon it's at least a foot deep.

The neighbor's 30 foot tree has given up the fight against the elements and gone all floppy octopus noodles across his backyard. It looks like some really deranged modern artist's depiction of a windstorm in Gumbyland, but more snowy.

This is my first time being snowed in. Exciting! I did many Xmas things like eating pie and laughing at the unfortunate, and even watched the Half Blod Prince movie I've been making myself wait for. I loved it.

Rain gave me Titanic themed gifties... a big map of the ship's blueprints, dates and facts, all that good shit. And some ice cube molds shaped like wee Titanics and icebergs for my next super morbid party. Fuck yeah.

And yummy sushi socks, a bacon chocolate bar, and a strange hawaiian hair-cthulhu with shells woven in. The new housemates gave me a small powerful space heater that, like, oscilates and shit. And Hurricane Michael gave me an interesting Xmas card that doubles as a packet of seeds for some type of environmentally helpful tree.

I am still waiting on several friends to notice their gifties, all of which were drawn because I are welfare king, and my holiday will be complete.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go use my inhaler again, dry off my hair and fantasize about what it might be like to possess dignity.

    What I got for Christmas...
...ended up being socks, and a screwdriver/tool set. I totally predicted that.

I also got an iPod shuffle, which means I can finally join the 21st century. It is pink, but I am going to exchange it for an orange one. My tool set is pink, too. What's with all the pink, Mom?

This was the best Christmas ever, because I pretty much avoided every single tradition. Yes, I got presents today, but I didn't ask for any.

I think this whole holiday needs to tone itself down, and stop being so annoying.

Now I am going to go find a place to download the Doctor Who Christmas special.

    Last Chance for Personalized #1!
Dat's wight, wabbits. Tomorrow (the 26th) is the cutoff date for awesome personalized sketches in issue #1. I'll still be doodling in every copy, but it'll be a random selection after the 26th.

Also, does anybody with good site design/programming skills feel up to redoing the Kagerou site? I have a navigation style loosely held in mind, but not the necessary skills to make it work or look right on various browsers. Ideally I'd like to end up with something similar to how the comics on http://www.onemanga.com are laid out, only without the whole troublesome "ripping the HTML like a total dick" part.

Many moons ago I said this would be done by the New Year, and now I am out of excuses to put it off. I can pay only with linkage, but will gladly contribute graphics to the layout as needed. Let me know if you're interested!

John Bailey: The Quest Never Ends
In my last blog post, I alluded to our quest to make Pidgin perfect (in our own eyes, at least). This is a quest that by its very definition can never end, because as we near "perfection," there will always be something else that crops up to demonstrate we haven't reached perfection quite yet. This "quest" can have elements of many different forms. A few months ago, one of those forms was discussed on our development mailing list.

As a good many people are aware, Pidgin has long supported GTK+ and GLib 2.0.0. Several years ago when GTK+ 2.0.0 first came out, we underwent a nine-month rewrite of our user interface (UI) to move from the older GTK+ 1.2.10 (or newer) to the new GTK+ 2.0.0. Since that time, until 2.6.0, we've always maintained compatibility with GTK+ 2.0.0 through the use of conditional code that disabled certain features or UI elements that required newer versions of GTK+ or GLib than what was available at compile time. In some cases, we had conditional use of code to work around the lack of certain convenience functions present in newer versions of GTK+ or GLib. In still other cases, we actually carried (that is, distributed in our source tarballs and compiled where necessary) the source of several GTK+ widgets in order to make our UI work for users with older versions of GTK+. Over the years, this has become more cumbersome, to the point that for 2.6.x, it became impractical to maintain compatibility with GTK+ 2.0.0--when we realized this, we changed our requirements to GTK+ and GLib 2.4.0, which contained the features we needed.

The increased difficulty of supporting older libraries prompted me to bring a discussion up on our development list prior to the release of 2.6.0 asking for a vote, discussion, etc. on raising minimum GLib and GTK+ version requirements for Pidgin 2.7.0. This discussion has come up before and been shot down. This time, I put it to a vote and gave quite a while for votes to be cast. There were no "No" votes cast. The versions we voted on were GLib 2.12.0 and GTK+ 2.10.0. These versions allow us to support reasonably recent Linux and UNIX systems, as those GTK+ and GLib versions were 3 years old at the time of the vote, while also making our lives significantly easier since we no longer have to care about really old versions of GTK+ or GLib. Ideally, I would have liked to have GLib 2.14.0 and GTK+ 2.12.0 as the minimums, but I was trying to reach a middle ground that would avoid angering too many people.

This change in the minimum required GTK+ and GLib versions has a few consequences. Obviously, Linux and UNIX distributions that don't ship GTK+ 2.10.0 or newer won't be able to support Pidgin 2.7.0 when we release it. On these systems, users can, however, compile GTK+, GLib, and friends, then compile Pidgin. This is really a lot of work, but some users may be willing to go through it.

For our Windows users, there will be some major changes. When building and linking our releases, we'll be stepping up to GLib 2.18.0 and GTK+ 2.14.0. We already ship this version or newer in our installers, but now we'll actually be linking against these versions. The consequences of this are that Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, and Windows ME will no longer be supported. These newer versions of GTK+ and GLib require features that just aren't present in those old operating systems. None of these operating systems have been commercially supported (by this I mean modern games, word processors, spreadsheets, etc.) for years, and even projects like Firefox have stopped supporting them.

Additionally, our Windows expert, Daniel, has made some changes to the Pidgin installer and to our crash report generation for 2.7.0:
    • Instead of installing GTK+ in a system-wide configuration, we will be changing to installing GTK+ local to Pidgin. This means that it should be harder for us to conflict with other GTK+ applications on Windows. This has long been requested, but we just finally got around to doing it.
    • Debug symbols can now be read from parallel copies of files. Normal installations of Pidgin ship "stripped" binaries--that is, there is no information useful for generating crash reports. Now, instead of replacing all the existing files, the installer will offer the option to install debug symbols. Selecting this option will install parallel, unstripped copies of every file with the extension ".dbgsym" to a special location.
    • The installer will allow choosing which Pidgin translations to install.
    • The installer will have "online" and "offline" variants. The "online" variant will include only Pidgin. GTK+ and debug symbols will be downloaded as needed. The "offline" variant will include both GTK+ and the debug symbols.
Also among the changes coming up for Pidgin 2.7.0 is the switch from the eggtrayicon widget we have carried in our source tarball for years to the GtkStatusIcon implementation that was added in GTK+ 2.10.0. There are still a few bugs to work out with this change, but I believe once we have those ironed out, our notification area icon will behave better for a number of users who have been experiencing difficulties.

Of course, these changes aren't the only ones that will make it into 2.7.0. I have my own plans for a few additions, plus I won't allow 2.7.0 to be released without a few other features being merged in. But so far, it looks like Pidgin 2.7.0 will make some long-awaited forward strides. Hopefully everyone enjoys it!

Also, to those who celebrate the holiday, Merry Christmas!
